What happens to my recycling?
Mixed recycling
After we collect the recycling (including paper, cardboard, plastics, cans, drink cartons, and glass) from your blue-lidded bin, it is first taken to our Cupid Green Depot. It is then transported to Pearce Group in St Albans, where it is sorted at a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). Here, materials are separated using methods such as magnets, air jets, and large rotating drums, before being prepared for reprocessing.

Once sorted, Pearce sells the materials. Where they are sold depends on the type, quality, and current market conditions. Pearce aims to sell within the UK, but sometimes there’s no option for local reprocessing.

Frequently asked questions
Food waste
After collecting your kerbside caddies, we first take your food waste to our Cupid Green Depot. It is then transported to an Anaerobic Digestion facility in St Albans.
Once there, the food waste is heated to 70 degrees centigrade for one hour using recycled heat from gas engines. It is then pumped into a digestion tank, similar to a giant stomach, for around 85 days. During this time, good bacteria break down the food to extract as much energy as possible. The energy generated is sent to the National Grid, and the remaining material is used as liquid fertiliser on farmland.

Garden waste
Once we collect your green-lidded bin, your garden waste is first taken to our Cupid Green Depot. Once there’s enough, it’s transported to a windrow facility in Enfield, Middlesex. The processed waste is then sold to farmers as soil improver.
