Bulky items collection

Donate your items

It is always better to give your items to someone else to use rather than recycling or disposing of them. There are plenty of ways to do this, either by giving them away for a small price or free of charge on sites such as eBayFreegle, Freecycle, Gumtree or various online market place groups.

If you have good-quality items to donate, such as furniture, local charity shops are happy to accept these. Many charities, such as British Heart FoundationDEBRA or Emmaus, offer a free collection service.

Bulky items collection

We provide a paid collection service for unwanted bulky household items. A bulky item is considered to be anything you could take with you when moving home. For example, free-standing items such as beds, wardrobes, sofas, fridges and cookers.

Please note: Building material, or anything that is part of the fabric of the house, such as rubble, car parts and kitchen units, are not considered to be bulky household items.

You may be able to dispose of larger non-bulky waste items at your local recycling centre. Find out what you can recycle on the WasteAware website.

Charges

As metals, electrical items and white goods (such as fridges, freezers, cookers and washing machines) are recycled and are collected on a separate day to ordinary household items, these are now being charged for separately. Please note: We can only collect two fridges/freezers per bulky item request.

Bulky items which may contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as sofas and other upholstered furniture, must be collected on a separate day from other bulky items and are now being charged separately. See the POPs section below for more details.

  • Up to three household items on one day £50 (Dacorum Card holder: £40)
  • Up to three household items containing POPs on one day £50 (Dacorum Card holder: £40)
  • Up to six household items on one day £77 (Dacorum Card holder: £54)
  • Up to six household items containing POPs on one day £77 (Dacorum Card holder: £54)
  • Up to three white goods, electrical or metal items on one day £50 (Dacorum Card holder: £40)
  • Up to six white goods, electrical or metal items on one day £77 (Dacorum Card holder: £54)
  • American-style fridges/freezers are charged at £77 each due to their larger size
  • A quoted collection may be possible for over six items, or unusual items.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

POPs are poisonous chemical substances that break down slowly and may get into food chains as a result. Items containing POPs now need to be collected separately from other household items and will be charged separately.

The following items of upholstered domestic seating are classed as containing POPs:

  • Sofas
  • Sofa beds
  • Armchairs
  • Kitchen and dining room chairs
  • Stools and foot stools
  • Home office chairs
  • Futons
  • Bean bags, floor and sofa cushions.

This includes any part made of/or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam.

Please note: items containing POPs cannot be placed in your grey bin as this will be treated as contamination.
