Home composting

Compost giveaway

On Sunday 15 May 2022 we will be hosting our annual compost giveaway for Dacorum residents at Cupid Green Depot, Redbourn Road, Hemel Hempstead HP2 7BA .

Compost is limited to two bags per car and will be on a first-come, first-served basis from 8.30am. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

We are continuing to be mindful about COVID-19, so we ask all residents to stay in their cars. The compost - which is provided by Biogen, the company that processes our garden waste - will be pre-bagged and our crews will load it into the cars for you.

We look forward to seeing you there.

About home composting

It’s easy to recycle your kitchen and garden waste at home by composting it. Over time this inexpensive and natural process will break down your waste and become a rich soil improver for your garden. Compost can be used for pot plants, flower beds, vegetable patches and even lawns.

Please note: cardboard and food waste should no longer be put in the green-lidded bin. For a reminder of what materials are acceptable, visit our green-lidded bin page.

Compost bins are available online from a variety of places, including the Get Composting website.

On selected models, you can buy two compost bins and receive the second bin half price. Further details are available on its website.

More information and advice about home composting and the multi-buy scheme can be found on the Hertfordshire WasteAware and Recycle Now websites.

Food waste caddies

Most households in the borough are entitled to one five-litre kitchen caddy and one 23-litre kerbside caddy or communal food waste bin dependent on location. The kitchen caddy will help you to collect food waste which can then be emptied into either your home compost bin, kerbside caddy or communal food waste bin for weekly collection. If you have not already received one you can request a kitchen caddy using our online forms.

Remember, unlike a home composter your kerbside food waste collection is for all food waste including meat waste, cooked vegetables and plate scraps.

All of our Recycling Centres sell 50-litre bags of 100 per cent recycled and peat-free soil improver for £5 per bag. This is made from the recycled contents of your green-lidded bins.
