Contamination - frequently asked questions

Expand all

  • Why is contamination in the green-lidded bin a problem?

The contents of the green-lidded bin are turned into compost, which is spread on farmland to enrich the soil.

If the bin contains non-garden waste (such as plastic, metal, textiles and food waste) it contaminates the compost and makes it unsuitable for use.

If contaminated, the recycling facility will reject the load, and it will end up in a landfill. This results in extra costs, which are ultimatley passed on to residents. That's why it’s important to only place garden waste in your green-lidded bin.

  • What bags can I use in my green-lidded bin and where can I get them?
Compostable logo - a strip of paper with leaves on the top in the shape of the letter b

You can only use compostable corn starch bags in the green-lidded bin.

These bags are available from our offices at £6 for a roll of 25 (reduced price for Dacorum Card holders). They can only be used for garden waste.

We only accept compostable bags bearing the seedling symbol (pictured) and the code EN13432.

  • Why can't I put plastic bags in my green-lidded bin?

We do not accept plastic and biodegradable plastic bags because they do not fully decompose over time. Only compostable corn starch bags (see above) are compatible with the composting process.

Avoid using other branded biodegradable or compostable bags, as they may not meet the facility's requirements.

Excess garden waste

If you regularly have excess garden waste you may want to buy an additional green-lidded bin along with your annual garden waste subscription. For more information, please visit our Garden Waste Subscription Service page.

You can also take your extra garden waste to your nearest Recycling Centre or compost at home.

What we do with your garden waste

Your garden waste is first taken to Cupid Green Depot. Once there is a large enough volume of garden waste, it is then taken to a facility in Suffolk where it is turned into compost.

Missed collections

If you put your green-lidded bin out for collection on the correct day and we missed it, you can report it online. Please do this within 48 hours of your scheduled collection day.
