Why we collect your personal information and your rights

We collect personal information so that we can perform our duties effectively. This includes data from residents, employees, businesses, and other third parties.

In most cases, laws or official authority allow us to process your information. Examples include:

  • storing information in a customer relationship management system
  • processing a planning application
  • administering Council Tax and housing benefits
  • handling complaints.

Your rights

  • be informed about the collection and use of your personal data
  • access your personal data and related information
  • correct any inaccurate personal data
  • request your personal information be erased (unless we are required by law to keep it)
  • object data processing in certain circumstances, such as when you've given consent.

Data protection principles

We must comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Data Protection Act. It gives you certain rights regarding your personal data. We must comply with these rights, unless exceptions apply.

GDPR says that personal data must be:

  • used fairly, lawfully and transparently
  • used for specific, explicit and legitimate purposes
  • used in a way that is adequate, relevant and limited to only what is necessary
  • accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date
  • kept for no longer than is necessary
  • used in accordance with your (data subject) rights
  • handled in a way that ensures appropriate security.
