Check if you qualify for Housing Benefit

Most people of working age need to apply for Universal Credit if they need help paying their rent.

You can only apply for Housing Benefit if you meet the following criteria:

Expand all

  • You and your partner have reached State Pension age

Both you and your partner (if you have one) must have reached State Pension age. If one of you is still under State Pension age, you will have to apply for Universal Credit.

You can check your State Pension age on the Government website.

  • You live in exempt accommodation

This is applies if your landlord (or someone acting on their behalf) also provides you with care, support or supervision.

    Your landlord must be a:

    • non-metropolitan county council in England
    • housing association
    • registered charity or
    • voluntary organisation.

Care, support and supervision usually means providing help with daily living tasks so that you can live more independently.

  • You live in supported housing

This is accommodation where you receive care, support or supervision but it is not provided by your landlord. For example, you receive a care package funded by Hertfordshire County Council.

    Your landlord must be a:

    • non-metropolitan county council in England
    • housing association
    • registered charity or
    • voluntary organisation.

If you live in Dacorum Borough Council supported housing, and you have not reached State Pension age, you must apply for Universal Credit instead.

Care, support and supervision usually means providing help with daily living tasks so that you can live more independently.

  • You live in a refuge

This is accommodation for those fleeing domestic abuse.

    Your landlord must be a:

    • local authority
    • housing association
    • registered charity or
    • voluntary organisation.
  • You live in The Elms (our hostel for homeless people)

The Elms is the only local authority hostel in Dacorum.

  • You live in temporary accommodation

This is emergency accommodation we provide under our homelessness duties. You will usually be given temporary accommodation while we decide your homeless application.
