Reusable period products scheme
The problem with single-use period products

Most disposable period products - such as pads, tampons, and liners - are made with up to 90 per cent plastic. In the UK alone, these products create around 200,000 tonnes of waste each year. Shockingly, around two billion of them are flushed down toilets annually - that's about 4.6 million every day.
Even though packaging warns against flushing them, many people still do. This not only harms marine life but also leads to the creation of fatbergs - massive clumps of waste made up of flushed products, wipes, nappies, fats, and oils. Clearing an estimated 300,000 fatbergs each year costs the UK around £100 million.
Herts Sustainable Periods Scheme
To help tackle this issue, Herts WasteAware created the Herts Sustainable Periods scheme. Its aim is to reduce period waste, while also supporting women’s health and tackling period poverty.
