Your responsibilities
Your responsibilities
You have a legal duty of care to:
- manage waste properly until it's recycled or disposed of
- use a registered waste carrier or register to carry your own waste
- keep the correct paperwork for at least two years.
Remember: your rubbish can damage the local environment and this can be bad for business.
Waste transfer notes
For each load of non-hazardous waste you move off your premises, you need a waste transfer note (sometimes referred to as a "Duty of Care").
You can use a season ticket to cover multiple transfers over a period of up to a year, as long as they are from the same site and handled by the same waste carrier. This is called an "annual waste transfer note."
If you choose to use an annual waste transfer note, you must also keep a separate document, known as a "schedule". This records the details of each waste transfer. The schedule should include key information such as the:
- date
- time
- quantity of waste (for example, the number of sacks).
You can record this information in a simple spreadsheet or as part of your invoicing system.
If you use our reliable and affordable commercial waste collection service you will receive an annual waste transfer note at the beginning of the financial year. New customers receive this document after container delivery and contract processing. This document ensures you comply with the law.
You will receive two copies free of charge. Extra copies for previous years are available upon request for a fee.
Site inspections
In partnership with District Enforcement, we may visit your site to check your documentation. You must keep up-to-date records on site for at least two years.
