• What is an LCWIP?

  An LCWIP helps councils plan long-term cycling and walking networks, making it easier for people to travel on foot or by bike to their local destinations.

• Why do we need an LCWIP?

  LCWIPs are an important step to becoming a safer and greener county. They also help residents to become more active by cycling and walking.

  As well as the health benefits, there may also be opportunities to enhance accessibility and boost the local economy.

  An LCWIP is essential for securing Government funding for walking and cycling schemes. This allows the creation of networks linking residential neighbourhoods with key destinations.
  

• How will the LCWIP encourage more walking and cycling?

  It will identify key routes that make walking and cycling easier for all. By having high-quality routes in place, we can enhance health and wellbeing, reduce air pollution and congestion, and boost the local economy.

• Does the LCWIP make provision for horse riders?

  Where possible, we will consider improvements for horse riders on LCWIP routes. Measures to improve the safety of on-road cycle routes - such as road closures, traffic calming and slower speed limits - should also benefit horse riders. However, the Government’s LCWIP Technical Guidance for Local Authorities does not refer to horse riding.

• What does the LCWIP say about electric scooters?

  The use of electric scooters is currently illegal on public roads in Hertfordshire. We can't plan future networks for these users, but if the law changes, we will update the LCWIP.

• How does the LCWIP address the climate emergency?

  Transport is the largest cause of carbon emissions in the UK. Developing a coordinated approach to cycling and walking infrastructure will support further investment in active travel. This will encourage people to travel more sustainably, reducing emissions and congestion and improving air quality.

• What are the next steps for the Dacorum LCWIP?

  Following the formal public consultation, we will review feedback and make any further amendments. Both ourselves and Herfordshire County Council will then need to adopt the LCWIP. The adopted LCWIP will be used as the basis for a future walking and cycling programme.

  Our aim is to create a safe and attractive environment for walking and cycling, so that they become the natural choices for shorter journeys and outdoor recreation in Dacorum.
