Avian influenza (bird flu)

Bird flu is a highly infectious disease affecting many species of birds. It is a notifiable disease. If you do not report it, you're breaking the law.

If you suspect any type of bird flu in poultry or captive birds, report it immediately by calling the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200 301. Failure to do so is an offence. Find out how to spot bird flu.

If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report it to Defra. You must not touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds. Find out more about bird flu.
