Localism
Localism
Localism is the transfer of power, resources, and decision-making from central government to local government, communities and individuals.
The Localism Act was introduced in 2011 (read a Plain English guide to the Act). The four key measures of the Act were:
- New freedoms and flexibility for local government
- New rights and powers for local communities
- Reform to make the planning system clearer, more democratic and effective
- Reform to ensure decisions about housing are taken locally
Community rights
The Act introduced "community rights", empowering community groups to shape their local areas more easily. Find out more below:Page Last Updated: Friday, 04 April 2025 at 09:00 AM
