On Thursday 8 May 2025, we commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) with a commemorative service at the Boxmoor War Memorial, Hemel Hempstead.

The event was attended by dignitaries, veterans, members of the armed forces community, schools and local residents. Organised in partnership with the Hemel branch of the Royal British Legion, it reflected the celebrations that marked the end of the Second World War.

The ceremony - led by Reverend Mike Macey from St John's Church - featured hymns, readings and the Act of Remembrance, providing a moment of reflection and unity. This was followed with a parade and salute by veterans, armed forces and cadets.

Among the honoured guests at the event was 100-year-old Roy Briggs, a former Lancaster Bomber wireless operator. We were also pleased to welcome His Majesty King Charles' personal representative for the county of Hertfordshire, the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Mr Robert Voss CBE CStJ. He joined the Mayor of Dacorum, civic leaders, members of the armed forces, veterans, and Mr Briggs in laying wreaths at the memorial.

Also on the day, we raised a special VE 80 Day flag at the Forum, attended by the mayor, councillors, and council officers. Flags have also been raised at other prominent locations across the borough, including the Walled Garden in Gadebridge Park and Tring Memorial Garden. While visiting these locations, look out for our newly installed Tommy statues, which serve as lasting tributes to our fallen soldiers and those who continue to serve.

Councillor Sally Symington, Leader of the Council, said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for our whole community to come together, not just to remember, but to celebrate the courage and resilience that led to peace in Europe. Victory in Europe (VE) Day is a reminder of the strength and determination of the human spirit.”

Councillor Caroline Smith-Wright, Portfolio Holder for People and Transformation, added: “Today’s celebration highlights the unity of our community, past and present. I found it especially touching to see the remarkable Roy Briggs at 100 years old and the Royal British Legion in fine form, to the young RAF cadets with aspirations to be jet pilots and the excited children from local schools who told me how much they loved saluting the marching parade and singing at the service.”

For those unable to attend the service, the ceremony highlights are available to watch on our YouTube channel.

We would like to thanks all those who attended and contributed to the service, including the Royal British Legion, local schools, armed forces personnel, and community representatives. Special appreciation is given to the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Reverend Mike Macey and to Mr Roy Briggs for their valued presence and support.
