Hemel Hempstead Old Town

Hemel Hempstead Old Town is a much-loved local area full of historic character and charm, with many listed buildings set within a conservation area.

It is close to Gadebridge Park and, with St Mary’s Church as a centrepiece, is an attractive place for people to enjoy.

As part of a flagship project for the borough, a range of improvements to the Old Town were completed in spring 2014 to help it achieve its full economic potential and attract more visitors to experience the charm of Hemel Hempstead’s historic centre.

Old Town regeneration

Hemel Old Town

The improvements include a new one-way system, more on-street parking and physical improvements that highlight the Old Town as a conservation area. A new events space has also been created and an evening taxi rank has been introduced to support the already busy night-time economy. Further improvements will bring new life to the Old Town Hall and The Bury.

The overall visual appearance of the Old Town has been enhanced to reflect its historic character and we have delivered new paving, street furniture, landscaping and improved signage.

Bespoke new gates have also been installed at the entrance to the High Street at Queensway, along with new lampposts and bollards in a conservation design. There is also new lighting, including up-lighting outside the Old Town and additional lanterns at each end of the High Street and in St Mary's Close car park.

In keeping with the character of the Old Town, the pavements and bays have been resurfaced in Moselden Yorkstone and granite setts. Works have also been completed in the Old Town Hall to improve the space and reopen The Cellar Club, to make it an even more attractive venue for a variety of cultural events.

Hemel Old Town Place Project

The Hemel Old Town Place Project has an aim to create a place where residents, businesses, community facilities and all stakeholders can thrive and feel pride in their local area. Establishing a place where people want to live, work and prosper. The Place Project Team approach will ensure that, along with key stakeholders and partners, we focus and align action and intervention in a coordinated and focused effort.

The Hemel Old Town Place Project aims to meet publicly with stakeholders on a regular basis. The first meeting took place on 13 October 2021, the second on 27 April 2022.
