Energy Bills Rebate

What is the Energy Bills Rebate?

The Government has announced support for households with the rising cost of energy bills by providing a £150 one-off payment that does not need to be repaid.

One payment will be made to every household that occupies a property on 1 April 2022 and meets all of the following conditions:

  • the property is in Council Tax band A to D. This includes properties valued in band E where there is a disabled band reduction in place
  • the property is someone's sole or main residence
  • the property is not exempt from Council Tax, unless the exemption is in class N, S, U or W
  • the person liable to pay the Council Tax occupies the property.
Within Dacorum, this means that we will be making about 45,000 payments to residents. We are setting up new processes to be able to make these payments in line with the Government's guidance. 

How will I receive my payment?

If you pay by Direct Debit, we will make payment into your bank account after we have collected your first instalment. The table below shows when you should expect to receive the payment, based on your instalment date.

When we make an automatic payment to you, this is because we have assumed that you were a liable taxpayer on 1 April 2022, and that you occupied the property as a sole or main residence. If this is not the case, then the rebate may be liable to be recovered from you. You should also note that the rebate is being paid to support all members of the household in the property.

There will be a few cases where we will not be able to automatically pay into your bank account even though you have set up a Direct Debit. These include where there is no Council Tax to be paid, or where our records show a different name on the bank account than the Council Tax liability. If this happens, we will write to you to tell you how to claim your payment.

If you do not pay by Direct Debit, or if you have no Council Tax to pay, we will write to you to tell you how to claim your payment.

When will you write to me?

We will send letters out to residents by Friday 13 May 2022.

You will need to complete a short online application form so that we can verify you and your bank account details. We are currently working on finalising this application process and how you can claim if you don't have access to the internet.

Discretionary scheme

We are making plans for a discretionary scheme, to help certain residents in Bands E to H, which will be announced by mid May. We do not have any further details at this time.
